Portfolio-Wide Factor Groups
Portfolio-Wide Factor Groups let you define a single group hierarchy at the portfolio level and apply it consistently across your models, plans, and reports.
How It Works
Portfolio-Wide Groups flow through five areas of the platform. Set it up once in Segment Admin, and the grouping carries through to your models, plans, and reports.
1. Set Your Group Type (Segment Admin)
The first step is choosing your group type at the portfolio level.
Navigate to Segments and select your portfolio segment. In the Configuration panel, you'll find a new Group Type dropdown with two options:
Segment-Level — Each segment maintains its own independent factor groups (existing behavior)
Portfolio-Wide — A single group hierarchy applies across all segments in the portfolio
This setting establishes the default for the groups page and the models created under this portfolio. You set it once, and it flows downstream.
2. Build Your Group Hierarchy (Factor Groups)
Once Portfolio-Wide is enabled, head to the Factors page and open Factor Groups from the Actions dropdown.
What's different in Portfolio-Wide mode
Each factor now shows its segment name in parentheses — for example, "Amazon (Segment A.1)" — so you always know which segment a factor belongs to.
Organizing your groups:
Search for factors by name using the search bar on the left
Filter by segment to narrow the factor list to a specific segment
Drag and drop factors into the group hierarchy on the right
Build multi-level groups (e.g., Media > Digital > Display) to match how your team thinks about channels
The hierarchy you build here is what your models, plans, and reports will use — so take the time to get it right.
3. Choose Group Set Per Model (Model Settings)
When creating or editing a portfolio model, Step 1 (Settings) now includes a Group Set option:
Single-Level — Uses segment-level groups
Portfolio-Wide — Uses the portfolio-wide group hierarchy you built in Factor Groups
This defaults to whatever you set in Segment Admin, but can be customized per model. This flexibility lets you run models with different grouping strategies side by side.
The Segment Models table below shows all segments included in the portfolio model, each with their individual model and date range.
4. Apply Constraints at the Group Level (Plans)
This is where Portfolio-Wide Groups become powerful for planning.
When your model uses Portfolio-Wide groups, the Set Constraints page in your plan now shows the full group hierarchy — not individual segments. You can set investment constraints at any level:
Group level — Constrain all tactics in a group across all segments (e.g., "All Digital = $2.2M")
Subgroup level — Constrain a specific subgroup (e.g., "Amazon across all segments = $1.0M")
Factor level — Constrain individual factors within a segment
Each row in the constraints table shows the factor name, segment, investment amount, and timing — giving you full visibility into where dollars are allocated across the portfolio.
Bulk Factor Constraints
Use the Select Factors to Constrain modal to quickly add factors to your constraint set. You can filter by:
Factor name — Find all instances of a factor across segments
Segment — See all factors within a specific segment
This makes it easy to apply consistent constraints across your portfolio without going segment by segment.
5. Analyze Across Your Portfolio (Reports)
Reports are where Portfolio-Wide Groups deliver the biggest insight advantage.
Tactic Performance Charts
The Tactic Performance bar charts now group at the highest level of your portfolio group hierarchy. In a single view, you can see:
Top level: Investment and profit across your major channel groups (e.g., Media, Trade)
Drill down: Click into a group to see its subgroups (e.g., Media > Digital)
Deepest level: See individual tactics broken out by segment (e.g., Meta across Segment A.1, B.1, B.2, A.2)
Each bar shows Model (current plan) vs Max Profit (optimized), so you can immediately see optimization opportunity at every level of the hierarchy.
Overtime Series
The overtime charts offer two complementary views:
Tactic Performance over time (left) — See how your portfolio-wide groups perform across weekly periods. Stacked areas show the relative contribution of each group (e.g., Media vs Trade) over the planning horizon.
Segment Performance over time (right) — See how investment distributes across segments. This answers: "Where is my money going geographically or by business unit?"
Toggle between Model and Max Profit to compare your current plan against the optimized scenario over time.
Decomposition Chart
Start at the big picture: you'll see your major channel groups (like Digital, TV, Radio, or Trade) and how much each one is driving. This is your "what's working and what's not" at a tactic level.
From there, you can keep going deeper:
Click into a group — Want to know what's happening inside Digital? Click in and you'll see the breakdown — Display, Paid Search, Social — and how each subgroup is contributing.
Go all the way to the tactic level — Keep drilling and you'll reach every individual tactic across every segment that rolls up to that group. This is where you can see, for example, exactly how Meta is performing in Segment A.1 vs B.1 vs B.2.
Model Error also gets its own group in the chart. Click into it to see where the unexplained variance lives across your segments — helpful for understanding how much of the picture the models are capturing.
Think of it as starting with the forest and walking into the trees only when you need to. You get the strategic answer first, and the detail is always one click away.
What Changed from Segment-Level Groups
